Wikis (day 2)
1. Creative Commons
As creators and educators it is great to be able to share what we have made with others and to have our students be able to share as well. We need to make sure we and they have used media and resources that have copyright permission and we should model this. If we use Creative Commons and or Public Domain materials we are OK to share.
On the Creative Commons website there is information about creative commons licensing and limited search sites (limited to creative commons materials) on common places we might look for media such as Google, Yahoo, and Flickr. Many of the software we use like Word, Power point, Note book software have clip art we can use. It is also wonderful to be able to use your own photos and videos.
The photo sharing site Flickr has a section dedicated to Flickr creative commons photos with various levels of permissions granted in advance.
- "Attribution" type of permission means that a photographer simply wants to be credited for the photo.
- "Non-Commercial" means the photo cannot be used for commerical gain.
- "Non-Derivative" means that the photographer does not want the picture changed.
Flickr's Commons, a collection of historical public photos which invites tagging by viewers, is an excellent resource for Social Studies and History.
